Despite a massive land mass of 483,450 kilometers, Yukon has a relatively small population of around 40,000 people.
Yukon provincial nominee program
Yukon was earlier known as Yukon Territory. It lies in the north-western end of Canada.
It is bounded by Northwest Territories to the east. It is bordered by the US state of Alaska on the west. On the Left Coast of Canada, British Columbia borders Yukon in the south. The province extends north toward the Beaufort Sea.
Yukon has the roots of its name in the aboriginal word of Gwich’in, Yu-kun-ah, which means “great river.” It refers to the 3,190 kilometers long Yukon River.
Although the area of the province is 483,450 kilometers, Yukon has a comparatively less population of approximately 40,000 people.
*As per the Yukon Bureau of Statistics’ Population Report [3rd Quarter 2020], the approximate population of Yukon as of September 30, 2020, was around 42,507.
The population of moose in the territory is more than the human population. It has been assessed that there were approximately 70,000 moose in the territory, compared to 40,000 humans living in the same area.
The capital of Yukon is Whitehorse.
Other prominent cities in Yukon include – Carcross, Faro, Dawson, Watson Lake, Carmacks, Haines Junction, Mt Lorne, Pelly Crossing, and Ibex Valley.
Yukon is one of the nine provinces of Canada that participate in the PNP or Provincial Nominee Program.
Yukon has an immigration program of its own, the YNP or Yukon Nominee Program, for the addition of new immigrants who want to take up Canada PR or permanent residency and settle in Yukon.

The YCP or Yukon Community Pilot was launched by the Yukon federal government in January 2020. The YCP is a federal-territorial permanent residence stream of Canada that offers a work permit.
The Yukon Pilot stream plans to attract and retain immigrants in the territory through testing ingenious approaches for immigration to Yukon.
Through the YCP, the entry of new immigrants in Yukon is facilitated through the granting of open work permits according to the IMP or International Mobility Program.
An immigrant who has a valid YNP nomination in the PR of Canada and more than one job offer from 3 employers for a participating territory in Yukon would be issued an open work permit that is “location-specific.” It does not require getting an LMIA or Labour Market Impact Assessment.
All the employment offers for the foreign national individual should be situated in the same community of YNP. The jobs can either be from the same or different employers.
The work to be done in the job offer should reflect the same NOC or National Occupational Classification code.
Six Yukon communities – Dawson City, Whitehorse, Carmacks, Haines Junction, Watson Lake, and Carcross – participate in the Yukon Community Pilot.
A three-year pilot, the YCP, will be valid until June 2023.
