Queensland is currently accepting applications for state nominations via the Skilled Migration Program 2023-24 FY. The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) has assigned 1,550 skilled nominations for FY 2023-24. The invitation rounds will be conducted in September 2023 and will continue every month with certain caps.

Victoria’s Skilled Migration Program is now open! Register now! 

Victoria’s Skilled Migration Program is now open for overseas applicants and applicants living in Victoria. The program provides a pathway for Permanent residency in Victoria.  To receive a nomination from the state, candidates must submit a Registration of Interest (ROI). The ROI once submitted for selection will remain in the system until withdrawn or selected. The Victoria’s Skilled Migration Program is expected to close in the early 2024. Candidates can receive nominations from Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491) and Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190).

Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491): 
To receive a nomination from the Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Subclass 491 visa, onshore candidates are required to be living and working in regional Victoria at the time of nomination. 
Candidates who have already submitted an ROI for Subclass 491 visa in 2022-23 and have not been selected, will be required to submit a new ROI (if applicable).  

Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190): 
Offshore candidates who have already submitted an ROI for Subclass 190, 2022-23 and have not been selected need not submit a new ROI unless there are official changes in the provided information. 
Candidates can check whether the ROI is still active via the official Live in Melbourne portal.

The Covid-era visa (Subclass 408 visa) to no longer exist from February 2024

The Australian government recently announced that the Covid-era visa of Australia will be terminated from February 2024. The Immigration Minister Andrew Giles and The Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil, released a statement saying “From February 2024, the visa will be closed to all applicants. This will provide certainty to our visa system now that the circumstances that drove the operation of the visa no longer exist.”

Australia to terminate the GPs program visas on 16 September 2023 

Australia will close the visas for the GPs program on September 16, 2023, ceasing the requirement for employers of the IMGs (International Medical Graduates) to apply for a Health Workforce Certificate (HWC). Starting from September 13, employers who wish to nominate IMGs are no longer required to submit an HWC in the nomination application. The deadline for submitting the HWCs is September 5, and September 13 for exemptions of HWC.

The government of Australia has granted 600 nomination allocations for Skilled nominated (Subclass 190) visa & Skilled Work Regional (Subclass 491) visa categories for the year 2023-24. A total of 50 ITAs were issued for the Subclass 190 and the Subclass 491 visas while 339 lodged applications are yet to receive a decision.

New Zealand citizens can now apply for citizenship via direct pathway!  

The citizens of New Zealand who have been residing in Australia for a period of 4 years or more can now directly apply for citizenship. The direct pathway will come into effect from July 1, 2023 and is applicable only to applications that are submitted on or after the 1st of July, 2023. New Zealanders living in Australia with a PR or Subclass 444: special category visa (SCV) can now apply for citizenship.

Subclass 485 (Temporary Graduate Visa) holders will now have increased visa duration. The new revisions are set to be implemented from July 1, 2023. Work restrictions for student visa holders 

Work limitations are set to be implemented on students in Australia, starting from July 1, 2023. The working hours for students will now be limited for 48 hours per fortnight. The DHA released results of the FY 2022-2023 invitation rounds  

The Department of Home Affairs (DHA) released the results of the 4th invitation round that was held on 25th May,2023. The invitation rounds were conducted for the Subclass 189 and 491 visas and had 7427 invitations issued in May. The four rounds of invitations collectively issued 68,042 invites with a minimum score range of 65.

Australia increased Temporary Skilled Income Threshold to $70,000 and expanded TR to PR pathways 

The Temporary Skilled Income Threshold will increase from $53,000 to $70,000, starting from July 1, 2023. The government also plans on expanding the immigration pathways from temporary residence (TR) to Permanent residence (PR) via the Temporary Residence Transition stream (TRT). The candidates must fulfill the eligibility criteria in order to qualify for the latest PR pathways.

International grads can now work in Australia for 4 years with the extended Post Study Work Permit

The work hours for international students have been increased from 40 to 48 hours for every fortnight. It will financially aid international students during their studies. The rules were formulated not to affect the education of international students. International grads in Australia with eligible higher education can now work in the country for an additional two years on Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485). Graduates can now reside, work and study in any of Australia’s regions for four years.

Australia held its second Canberra Matrix draw in 2023, in which 632 candidates were invited to apply for ACT nomination. The cut off score for this draw was between 65 and 75. Candidates can later apply for Australia PR after residing for some years in the country.
