Work in Canada - 4% increase in wages, rise in employment

• A rise of 126,000 employees in payroll employment was recorded in April 2022.

Another encouraging news came from Canada related to the statistics of employees on payroll and at work in Canada.

The SEPH (Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours) has brought to the fore lots of interesting information regarding the payroll employment scene in Canada. As per the agency’s report, the number of employees who received pay or benefits from their employer has increased by 126,000. This comes to 0.7%, as recorded in April 2022.

Taking Canada’s provinces, you can notice that all Canadian provinces other than Quebec have recorded a significant change in the number of employees. Here are the numbers from the provinces that recorded the largest increase in payroll employment:

Also, in April 2022, the number of employees who were at work in Canada on the payroll in all Canadian provinces returned to or went above the employment levels in February 2020 (the pre-pandemic time). A rise in paid employment of Canada work visa holders sets new hopes

Every Canadian province had eased public health measures in April 2022 that were existing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This was done commensurate to capacity limits. It allowed most businesses in Canada to carry on their operations without any restrictions which were attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Industry trends in Canada

Here are some facts about the services-producing sector that were revealed regarding the employment levels in April 2022:

• The increase in payroll employment was 90,300 (+0.6%).
• The total increase since February 2022 was 314,300 (+2.3%).
• The gains recorded in 11 of 15 sub-groups in the service-producing sector were driven by:
  • Educational services: +9,700 (0.7%)
  • Accommodation & food services: +34,500 (+2.9%)

Here are the numbers related to the goods-producing sector in April 2022:

• The increase in payroll employment was 18,700 (+0.6%).
• This was the largest increase since January 2022 when there was an increase of 27,500 (+0.9%).
• The gains recorded in the goods-producing sector were driven by:
  • Manufacturing: +4,600 (+0.3%)
  • Construction: +10,500 (+0.9%)
  • Mining, quarrying, and oil & gas extraction: +2,300 (+1.1%)

Let’s take a look at the industry-wise trends in payroll employment in April 2022.

Accommodation & Food Services

• An increase of 34,500 (+2.9%) was recorded in this sector.
• The total increase since February 2022, was 115,700 (+10.4%).
• The gains recorded in this sector in various provinces were as follows:
  • Quebec: +7,600 (+3.1%)
  • Ontario: +11,700 (+2.7%)
• Payroll employees in this sector was 118,200 (-8.8%) lower than pre-pandemic level.

Educational Services

• An increase of 9,700 (+0.7%) was recorded in this sector.
• Payroll employment crossed the level in February 2020 for the first time by 8,000 (+0.6%).
• The gains recorded in this sector in various provinces were as follows:
  • Nova scotia: +900 (+2.1%)
  • Quebec: +3,100 (+0.9%)
  • Alberta: +4,000 (+2.8%)
• Credit for over half the monthly increase went to elementary and secondary school services. They recorded an increase of 5,800 (+0.7%).
• Among the provinces that crossed the pre-pandemic levels of payroll employment were
  • Brunswick: +6.3%
  • Nova Scotia: +6.0%

Construction

An increase of 10,500 (+0.9%) was recorded in this sector.

• The gains recorded in this sector in various provinces were as follows:
  • Alberta: +4,900 (+2.8%)
  • Ontario: +2,100 (+0.5%)
  • British Columbia: +1,700 (+0.9%)
• Almost all sub-sectors of the construction sector crossed the pre-pandemic level of payroll employment with residential building construction going the furthest with an increase of 16,900 (+11.5%).

The upward trend in the job vacancy scene

There were close to 1 million job vacancies to fill at the beginning of April 2022. The increase in job vacancies across industry sectors was up by 2.4% compared to March 2022. It was also 44.4% more than the employment in April 2021.

The job vacancy rate in April 2022 was 5.8%. This was 4.4% higher than what it was in April 2021.
