2. Increase in Skilled Migration visa places

Last year, the Australian DHA or Department of Home Affairs allocated 79,600 places for the visa for the category of Skilled Migration. This year, the DHA has announced an increase in the number of visa places, that is, 109,900 for the skilled migration category.

The count is likely to increase after the changes by DHA in the migration cap for each year. It is good news for international skilled professionals wanting to migrate to Australia.

3. More Occupations and Ease of Requirements

Many Australian states have added to their in-demand occupations list, that is, significant SOL or Skilled Occupation List. It means that the applicants for a skilled visa will have a broad range of occupations to select from. The major programs for state nominations have also eased their nomination requirements for skilled visa candidates.

Major Australian Visa Categories

Through the point-based GSM or General Skilled Migration of Australia, one can apply in any of the 3 skilled Visa categories. They are:

  • Skilled Independent Visa Subclass 189 - Permanent Visa
  • Skilled Nominated Visa Subclass 190 - State nominated PR visa
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa Subclass 491 - Regional 5-year visa (offers Australia PR after 3 years)

Occupation Ceilings for Invitation Rounds

An 'occupation ceiling' is applicable for invitation rounds issued through autonomous and provisional skilled regional visas. It means that there will be a practical upper limit to the number of EOIs or Expressions of Interest to be invited in the stream of skilled migration from a field of occupation.

It ensures that the program of skilled migration remains steady and continues to issue invitations to immigrants across various skilled occupations.

The values in the occupation ceiling are based on the percentage of reserve employment figures for every occupation. Employment figures published by the Bureau of Statistics of Australia represent the number of individuals employed in Australia for each occupation.

Occupation ceilings are not applicable to State or Territory Business Innovation or Nominations and subclasses of investment visas.

Process of invitation and cut-offs

The individuals who have the highest rank through the points score system are issued an invitation to apply for a suitable visa.
