• You need to have a degree from a university in Germany or a vocational qualification. Your job must be related to your education. A university degree isn’t a requirement to obtain a German work visa. You only need to have vocational training.
• Your employer must be residing in Germany.
• You have to be qualified for the job offered.
• You must have permission to work in this job in Germany. In case you need any specific qualifications to get employed in the given job, you must present proof that you have them.
• You are required to obtain approval from the ZAV. The ZAV is the system that does the verification to confirm that the offered job position can't be filled by citizens of an EU member state.
• It’s mandatory that you have German health insurance. You must also have a place to live in Germany. You must apply for German health insurance before you file an application for a German work visa.

Step 2: Choose your work visa

There are different types of German work visas.

Germany EU Blue Card

This type of work visa is suitable for university graduates who intend to work in Germany. Here are the requirements for the Blue Card:

• Your annual income has to be at least EUR56,400. In times of shortage of skilled workers in the field that you are active in, you have to earn an annual income of EUR43,992.
• You must have a degree that must have recognition in Germany. It has to be listed as “equivalent” in the Anabin database.

Working Holiday Visa

If you are a citizen of Israel, Australia, Japan, and New Zealand aged 18 to 30 years, you can file an application for a Working Holiday Visa. It allows you to work in Germany for a period of not more than 1 year. This category of visa is easier to obtain than EU Blue Cards and Germany work visas.

Youth Mobility Visa

If you are a citizen of Canada, in an age range of 18 to 35 years you can lodge an application for Germany’s Youth Mobility Visa. This visa is similar to the Working Holiday Visa. With this visa, you get the permission to work in Germany for a period not exceeding a year.

You can apply for this visa in Canada or from Germany. Compared to Working Holiday Visa and EU Blue Card Visa, this visa is easier to obtain.

Freelance visa

This visa category is meant for freelancers, business owners, and foreigners who are self-employed and want to work in Germany.

Step 3: Get your qualifications recognized

It’s while the “recognition procedure” of qualifications that the competent authority in Germany verifies whether your professional qualification from abroad is equivalent to a qualification in Germany or whether they have differences.

The procedure they use for this check is known as “equivalence assessment”. After your documents are submitted fully, the German authority will usually do the examination for them in under three to four months.

The procedure for recognition of qualification can cost up to EUR600.00. In some cases, this can exceed that amount.

Step 4: Arrange a checklist of requirements

Here is a list of required documents that you need to submit while applying for a Germany Work visa:

• Two application forms, fully completed; They must be signed and printed at the end of the document
• Two photographs of passport size (check requirements for photographs to comply with German authority’s strict requirements)
• A national passport that’s deemed valid by German authorities.
• A proof that shows the location of your residence (A utility bill in your name and/or your driver’s license as residence proof in the territory of the consulate where you have plans to file an application)
• Proof of health insurance with a German provider; The certificate must be had from the German employer and has validity from the date of your employment; In the case of not included in the mandatory health insurance, you must attach a separate travel insurance certificate which has to be presented for the period starting from your arrival in Germany till the commencement of your employment
• A contract of employment/job offer that’s binding with details such as gross annual salary and description of your offered employment with the employer in Germany
• The approval granted by the Federal Employment Agency (in case it’s applicable)
• Your curriculum vitae, updated and indicating your academic qualifications as well as your work experience
• Proof of your educational qualifications – Mark sheets, Certificates, Diplomas, etc., or a similar document that serves as proof of your qualifications.
• A personal cover letter that explains the true purpose and period of stay in Germany.
• Proof that you have done payment of the visa fee which is EUR75.
• Proof that you have a clean criminal record.
• Declaration of Accuracy of Information.

Step 5: Apply for Germany Work Visa

You are required to apply for a Germany Work visa at the body representing Germany in the country you reside and who is responsible for visa admission. One of the following could qualify to be that body:

• A German consulate
• The German embassy
• The German consulate/embassy is situated in a neighboring country, as bodies representing Germany are absent in the country you reside
• VAC (Visa Application Center)
• The consulate/embassy of another country situated in the country you reside in to which visa admission to Germany has been outsourced by Germany
