Denmark student visa

Students who wish to study in Denmark can choose from the country’s many top-ranked universities and offers scholarships and grants to deserving students.

Requirements for Denmark study permit

The conditions for obtaining a Denmark study permit vary depending on your country of origin. You can study in the country without any permit if you are from one of the Nordic nations, such as Norway, Sweden, or Finland. You will only need a personal identification number, which you will receive when you present your passport or other form of identification upon arrival.

If you have a valid passport and are a member of the EU, EEA, or Switzerland, you can stay in Denmark for up to three months. You will, however, need a Danish registration certificate if you intend to remain longer than three months. You will receive a personal identification number with this certificate, which is required if you wish to work in the country.

You will need a permit to study in Denmark if you are not from the EU or EEA. The type of permit you need will be determined by the length of your stay. You would need a permit if you intend to stay for less than three months, and a residence permit if you plan to stay for more than three months.

You can apply for this permit at the Danish embassy or consulate in your country. This permit however does not allow you to work in Denmark.

Visa for short term stay

You can apply for this visa at the Danish embassy or consulate in your country. This visa however does not allow you to work in Denmark.

Residence permit for long-term stay

You may need to apply for a residency permit if you need to remain in Denmark for more than three months for your studies. The form can be submitted at the Danish embassy in your home country. Students with a residence permit can work in Denmark for up to 20 hours per week.

You will not need to renew your residency permit during your program because it will be valid for the length of your program. It is preferable to start the request process three months prior to your trip to Denmark.

Process for study permit
  • Open an account on the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Apply Visa website.
  • Fill out the online form for Denmark.
  • Then, depending on the type of permit, pay the necessary fees.
  • Schedule an appointment at one of the approved VAC in Denmark. You can do so by visiting the website of the VAC in your region.
  • You can then visit the VAC with the cover letter that you received via e-mail and submit your biometrics there.
