The findings of a Statistics Canada study revealed interesting information about the effect of immigration on Canada’s population. The study found that 82% of the growth in population that happened in Canada this year was due to Canada immigration.
In the first 3 months of this year, Canada’s population increased to 76,000. Immigration Canada itself contributed 70,000 people to the population.
The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic was a major reason to the decrease in the quarterly growth of population this year. In fact, this year, Canada had its lowest quarterly population growth since 2015 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After the COVID-19 came to Canada in January 2020, the country had proceeded with many preventive steps. This included the travel restriction imposed from March 18. In this situation, the influx of people in the form of returnees to Canada, temporary residents, and students have been much lesser compared to the numbers in 2019.
But interestingly, the first 3 months in 2020 had more immigrants arriving in Canada than what was in the same period in 2019.
There was 80% lesser number of temporary residents arriving in Canada this year. This was mostly associated with the lesser number of international students arriving in Canada.
The Statistics Canada study expects the low performance in immigration to continue till the end of June 2020. Despite the dampened state of affairs, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is keeping its immigration level plans intact for the period 2020-2022.
Once the pandemic ends, Canada will bounce back into a strong position where immigration will yet again prove to be the strongest factor in supporting the country’s economy, population, and labor force.
