Canada PGP to resume

Canadian PRs and citizens can soon apply to sponsor their parents and grandparents to immigrate to Canada. The Canada immigration department will accept interest to sponsor forms for the PGP. This will be donein the period from 12:00 pm EDT on October 13, 2020, to 12:00 pm EST on November 3, 2020.

The interest to sponsor in itself isn’t an application for PGP. It’s rather an opportunity for people to show their willingness to sponsor their family members for immigration to Canada.

After the form is submitted, IRCC will randomly select potential sponsors. These sponsors will be sent ITAs to submit an application under 60 days. These ITAs will be non-transferable. The ceiling for accepting applications for PGP is set at 10,000 applications this year. In 2021, the total intake of applications will be stepped up to 30,000.

IRCC is also coming up with public policy on a temporary basis that will reduce the income requirement for the tax year 2020 to the minimum necessary income. This will help accommodate those who have been financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The registration under PGP would have been open earlier this year but was delayed owing to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Who can sponsor?

  1. Canadian citizens, PRs, and registered First nations
  2. Such persons in point 1 living in Canada who are 18 years or above in age
  3. Such persons in point 1 who also have sufficient money to support those family members they sponsored for 20 years starting from their becoming PRs (10 years in Quebec along with an assessment of sponsor income)

The sponsors will have to sign an undertaking with the government that they will provide for the basic needs of their sponsored family members. The sponsors will also agree to do all things possible to support themselves.

Who can be sponsored?

  1. The biological parents and grandparents of eligible Canadians
  2. Stepparents also in case of separation or divorce
  3. Sisters, brothers, and half-siblings (if they are dependent children under 22 years of age)

The PGP is not meant for sponsoring the applicant’s in-laws, and spouse’s parents and grandparents. Nevertheless, there could be a co-signer on the applicant’s in-law's application. Also, parents and grandparents deemed inadmissible to Canada are also not eligible for sponsorship.
