Nova Scotia why a destination for immigrants

A study was made to understand why Nova Scotia was chosen by immigrants as their destination to live and work in Canada. The results gave a good deal of insight into the strengths and weaknesses of this Canadian province that has great significance in Canada immigration on a provincial level.

Here are some facts that came to view:

  • Employment is a major factor drawing people towards Nova Scotia. Close to 46% of all immigrants who left Nova Scotia between 2011 and 2018 did so because of dwindling job opportunities.
  • About 74% of immigrants who had reached Nova Scotia between 2011 and 2018 chose to stay back in the province.
  • The 3 major reasons cited by the respondents to leave the province were:
    • Seeking better job opportunities
    • Looking for better wages and lesser taxes
    • Finding better healthcare
  • Other reasons for them leaving included discrimination at the workplace.
  • Most of the immigrants who went away from Nova Scotia were comparatively younger and more probably single.
  • There were no significant differences in education level and gender between those who stayed back in Nova Scotia and those who left.

The reasons for people to choose to arrive in Nova Scotia included:

  • Over 40% of immigrants chose Nova Scotia PNP because of the job opportunities the province offered to themselves and their spouses.
  • 60% chose Nova Scotia because of factors like safe communities, quality of life, communities without discrimination, and a good place to raise children.

The study revealed the fact that the economic-class immigrants were the ones who stayed back in Nova Scotia the least, compared to the refugee and family class immigrants.

The Atlantic Immigration Program has been one program that gives a lot of hope and scope to improve immigration to the province by facilitating the hiring process of even more foreign workers. For this, the employers in the province are given he opportunity and motivation to find skilled workers from overseas willing to work in Canada in Nova Scotia.

Initiatives in encouraging activities such as sports and recreation are also planned and implemented by the government to increase the influx of immigrants in Nova Scotia.
