Are you unsatisfied with the course and DLI (Designated Learning Institute) assigned to you in Canada?
Good news for you! You can change your course or university upon landing in the province, provided you have a valid study permit or visa.
- The IRCC must receive prior notifications from you with complete details of the changes you wish to make in the DLI or course.
- Students who cease their education at the current university get 150 days to start a new course in a different Designated Learning Institute.
- Students must adhere to the above directive to avoid being considered as disobedience to the study permit regulations.

Steps to change your DLI or course
Step 1: Create an account on the IRCC website.
Students who apply for the permit offline must create an account online and link the application.
Step 2: Study permit Number
The study permit number usually starts with “S” and is at the top right corner. The officials could ask for additional information from the application for verification purposes.
Step 3: The new DLI number
You can find the unique DLI number from the list of DLIs.
Step 4: The new student ID
You can find the new student ID mentioned on the acceptance letter of the new university or school.
Step 5: Date of joining
*A DLI can be changed without the assistance of a representative, provided you have complete details of the study permit application.
Change your DLI from outside Canada?
If the application is still in process:
A new letter of acceptance can be submitted via the IRCC web form.
If the application is approved:
Details of the new study permit and the recent acceptance letter must be submitted, and pay the application fees.

Study in Quebec
- Applicants will require a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (QAC) if the old DLI is outside Quebec and the new DLI is in Quebec.
