Highlights: Australia reforms its migration system

Australia’s 5 main targeted constituencies
In a press meet with the National Press Club, Claire O'Neil suggested two significant changes with six critical pointers that will be addressed.
Increase in the Minimum labour wages
- The minimum salary for immigrants will be increased from the 1st of July, 2023.
- The decision to increase was also taken to support immigrants seeking sponsorship from an Australian employer.
- The Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) was fixed at a rate of $53,000 for the past ten years.
- The revised Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT) will be increased to $70,000.
PR Pathways
- Temporary skilled workers can now apply for Australian permanent residency (PR).
- The new changes for temporary skilled workers will be implemented towards the end of 2023.
- As per the reports, a total of 2.1 million temporary skilled immigrants are currently residing in Australia.
Three latest migration tiers
Three principal levels that have been finalized for migration are given below –
- Light touch tier
- Mainstream skilled pathway
- For essential industries
A light touch tier:
- This will streamline the immigration process for workers who earn high wages.
- The new change is taken to improve the long processing time for the highly skilled worker visas.
Mainstream skilled pathway:
- This is primarily for middle-income earners that will most likely see a hike in the wage threshold.
- This will also focus on addressing the labor shortages in the country while bringing in fresh ways of managing them.
For essential industries:
- This is to control the entry of low-earning migrants migrating to Australia to work in the primary industries.

Limited visa types
- The Home Affairs Minister plans on streamlining and scaling down over 100+ Australian visas and subclasses.
- The Significant Investor Provisional Visa, or the golden ticket visa, could be eliminated.

- The Immigration Reviews emphasizes the importance of sustaining highly talented international students with skills that can contribute to the growth of Australia's economy.
- The government plans to come up with immigration policies that can work on securing skilled graduate students with relevant skills and expertise.
