Canada invests to increase equity, diversity and inclusion

The Government of Canada is well aware of the importance of increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in science and research. This leads to better results for Canadians and every Canadian permanent resident as it enhances their innovation, excellence, and creativity.

The Canadian government is committed to winning over the challenges faced by disadvantaged and under-represented groups. These include women, visible minorities, indigenous people, and people with disabilities in Canadian research institutions. The impact on research is also addressed largely through the government’s initiatives.

On March 12, 2021, it was announced that 5 institutions in Western Canada are getting grants for ensuring diversity, equity, and inclusion along with institutional capacity-building. The total amount of these grants comes to about $2 million. This is part of the total funding of $4.8 million being awarded via the competition in 2020. The competition is to extend support to 12 institutions across Canada. Such support will help them go through, adapt to, and implement changes to promote increased equity, overcome systemic barriers, bring diversity and inclusion, and create career opportunities for researchers with more inclusion.

The grant named “Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Institutional Capacity-Building Grant” is a program launched as a pilot in 2019. It’s supported by the NSERC, SSHRC, and CIHR. NSERC has taken up its administration on behalf of the 3 federal research granting agencies.

Across Canada the following institutions are getting funding via the grant:

  • Cégep de l’Outaouais
  • Collège de Maisonneuve
  • Centennial College
  • Emily Carr University of Art + Design
  • Lethbridge College
  • Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology
  • Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology
  • Francis Xavier University
  • NorQuest College
  • Université du Québec à Rimouski
  • Thompson Rivers University
  • University of Lethbridge
